Student Life, The Snippets

We recently subscribed to The Student Life (TSL), (Pomona College's weekly student newspaper). Most content is of little alum interest, but occasionally something pops up. To subscribe, call 909-607-2269 and leave a message if no one answers. Well, let us know what you think of this feature.

There are 399 freshmen, a 4% increase from 1994.

New Campus Center (Coop) ground breaking is scheduled for June 1, 1997.

Dean of Students, Ann Quinley, and Vice President of Planning, Richard Fass, indicate that Pomona College would like to increase (albeit not too rapidly) enrollment. Admissions Office records reveal 2.5% annual growth since spring 1994.

This response from Richard Fass (email_deleted) arrived too late for print distribution:

"As a result of the strategic planning process that was conducted several years ago, the College decided that enrollment should increase only in proportion to any necessary expansion of the academic program. The enrollment has grown 2.7% since Fall, 1994, and the faculty has grown proportionately."

(The College has not decided that it would like to grow -- only that it must grow if we need to respond to demands for expansion of academic programs. Also, the Admissions Office stats don't tell the story, since enrollment may also change because of leaves, withdrawals, etc., that are not reflected in stats about new students.)

A new Claremont College, a life sciences graduate school, is being considered by Claremont University Center (CUC). Bernard Field Station, located at the northwest corner of Foothill and Mills, is one controversial proposed site.

October 11, 1996

The controversy over a proposed site for a possible seventh Claremont College continues. How Pomona College biology classes would suffer if Bernard Field Station is used is detailed. A CUC-owned golf course and an abandoned quarry are also possible sites.

Robert W. Kummer, Jr. and David S. Ward were named Pomona College Trustees.

An environmental studies concentration with an interdisciplinary approach may be soon be established. Contact Rick Hazlett (email_deleted), Mathematics, to help or for more information.

This is Professor of Anthropology, Jim McKenna's, last year. He has accepted a position at Notre Dame. Pomona tried, but failed, to match Notre Dame's offer.

Construction of the Wash is still not complete.

Point Communications (http://www.pointcom.com) names Pomona College's website, which can be found at http://www.pomona.edu, the number one overall college website.

Admissions officer John Thomas Griffith edits web-zine, Jam! Online (http://www.jam-online.com).

November 22, 1996

New Campus Center proceeds. Demolition of Edmunds Union will begin on July 1, 1997. Completion is scheduled for February, 1999 for a projected cost of $17 million. Project includes renovating the ballroom.

The Spectator, a Pomona College (mostly) literary journal faces publishing difficulties. Editors' irreconcilable differences resulted in separate issues last year. Apparently there will be two issues again, this year, although they won't be separate. [Huh? -Eds.] More pressing, however, is that only 40 items, far short of the desired 70, have been submitted.

December 13, 1996

Pomona College President, Peter Stanley, suggested that Dean of Students, Ann Quinley, "should move on to other things."

Pomona College plans to build two dorms, Lawry D and E, on what is now Atherton Field behind Frary Dining Hall. One dorm will be called the "Nest," and will house those interested in promoting school spirit.

The City of Claremont approved the opening of a second franchise, In-N-Out, in the Village at the corner of First Street and Yale Avenue (the old Sumitomo drive through). The popularity of the first franchise, Starbucks, prompted the approval.

A move is afoot the change the Pomona Mascot from the Sagehen to the Stag in order to heighten school spirit and athletics name recognition.

[December 13th was a Friday the 13th. It's a joke issue. Get it? -Eds.]
