Actives' Reports

  • The President

    Phil Gillman '97 #1101

Well, here I am writing a very belated report of the active president to all of you Oak Leaf readers. By the time you receive this issue there will be an as of yet undetermined number of new Nappies. Perhaps the web site will have some interesting maggot comments on it regarding initiation, so check it out. I am currently undergoing the completely insane process of attempting to organize about 4700 different Nappie events and ideas at once, and so this may seem to be a bit of a scattered report.

We actives are 31 brothers and 26 sisters strong for a total of 57. We fairly evenly span the range of the sophomore through senior classes, although a few of us seniors have been around for more than the average. We initiated maggot number 1184 last semester. Our lowest current maggot number is 1095. Hopefully, we will soon induct members of the class of '00.

On other home front news, about two thirds of the Pomona student senate is either in a Fraternity or pro-fraternity. A serious effort is being made to allow fraternities to regain some of there previous status in the eyes of the administration. That is, money, more room access, and more inter-fraternity control over judicial action relating to fraternity related rule breaking. For this reason, I ask any of you out there who are so motivated, please send letters to the student senate and/or the student activities committee and express your feelings regarding your involvement in Nu Alpha Phi while you were a student and now as an alum. The school values your input, as do we.

I am trying to encourage more communication between actives and alums than has occurred in recent years. We hope to hold several events on alumni weekend to remind ourselves and the school that one of the greatest things this fraternity does is break down generational barriers. If nothing else, we are all Nu Alpha Phi, we are all brothers and sisters, and for those bonds alone, we shall stand together until the end.

That's all for now. I will, however, keep writing President's Reports, and we may even publish an Active issue of the Oak Leaf. I'll be in touch.

  • The Cabin

    Adam Doerr '97 #1136

All is well with the beloved cabin. As a matter of fact, it looks better than it has at any point in recent history due to a series of work parties last semester and some recent renovations by motivated actives.

To start at the beginning, we uncovered ancient Nappie hieroglyphics under the bar during a party last semester. As we discussed the decrepit state of the bar, we noticed that the sheet of plastic wood paneling attached to the bar could be easily removed, so we took it off. Underneath we found wonderful things--carvings of Nappie names, numbers and dates going back to the origins of the fraternity. However, due to the bar's age, one of the planks was badly cracked and the joints between them were held by staples. Actives Adam Doerr '97 #1136 and Mike Thomas '98 #1144 subjected the bar to a thorough renovation, replacing the staples with inlaid cherry butterfly joints, cleaning the surface to remove years of grime, and finishing the bar with a water resistant finish. It looks absolutely wonderful and should stand the test of time beautifully, and we hope to include a list of the inscribed names, numbers and dates in the next issue.

The rest of the interior was also worked on this semester by actives Maury, Johnny Paradiso '98 #1165, Sarah Moore '97 #1178, and Ben Urquhart '98 #1141. Everything was cleaned, and Sarah replaced the curtains with beautiful red velvet. The kitchen was also painted and cleaned, as was the porch and back room. The cabin now looks absolutely fantastic.

As for the exterior, the trail underwent extensive work last semester, but due to heavy rains has again begun to deteriorate. We look at it as a work in progress, and continue our maintenance efforts. The biggest problem is the roof, which has some serious problems with dry rot. Brother Cohen '98 #1139 is working with one of the alums to have this repaired and we hope to have the work done by the end of the semester.

We hope to have a gathering at the cabin this year during alumni weekend to show off our efforts and to provide actives and alums with a chance to get better acquainted. Further information will be forthcoming, but you are all invited and we're all looking forward to the occasion.

  • The Wash

    Nathan Busse '97 #1179

All true and loyal members of Nu Alpha Phi can easily be located on a Friday afternoon at the newly refashioned Fred Sontag Memorial Amphitheater, or "The Wash" to those who hold the area close to their heart. One needs only to open their ears to be lured to an oasis of relaxation, drink, and conversation. Nu Alpha Phi, long time host to the Friday afternoon event, can be seen in its diverse multitude, along with all comers from the surrounding community of students and citizens alike.

Originally hosted by the Phi Delta fraternity, the Wash came under the reins of Nu Alpha Phi in the fall of 1973. The only condition upon the surrendering of the Friday afternoon event was that the remaining enrolled Phi Delta members receive free beer at the Wash. Under the supervision of Nu Alpha Phi fraternity members, the Wash has played host to numerous dramatic and musical events.

Most recently, the Wash has been the locale for annual student productions of The Rocky Horror Show, an afternoon Rave, and an inter-fraternity party. While these events have expanded the scope of the Wash enormously, no event compares with the weekly congregation of students and friends looking to let go on a Friday afternoon. Bolstered by alcohol, Nappies find the love and community promised them when they first applied by Pomona's administration. Here, it has been said, is the true spirit of the student body. Be you long haired, short trained, pierced, tattooed, or naked, there is a place for you at the Wash. In addition to sitting and drinking, many also find it enjoyable to throw around a Frisbee, hack it up, or just goof off with any canine friends paying the Wash a visit.

If you live in town or travel brings you near, stop on in and have a beer.
