Men In Back With Zibby’s “retirement” from Nu Alpha Phi Alumni responsibilities (see another story somewhere else), several someones had to step into the breach. Identifying himself as the “Mouthpiece,” Don Smith takes the lead with able assistance from Chuck Carpenter.
Don Smith ‘53 #384At the suggestion and urging of Ken Smith ‘33 #138 (who thought the classes from the ‘50s “ought to do something”), we formed an ad hoc committee of 1950 NAP Alums. Our purpose, to focus on maggots of the 1950s who would be willing to lift the “daily operations burden” off Zibby and allow him to gracefully retire into true “Emeritus Status.” The committee is:
Obviously a studious group, we labored long and hard to select the right candidates to share what Zib has done alone all these years and we were tremendously successful! We decided on:
“Mouthpiece” made the calls and got three acceptances in a row!! Chuck agreed to be point man and Chet and Roger will support and back him up as required. At the Nu Alpha Phi brunch on May third, the foregoing was announced and received with great enthusiasm on all fronts, so “the three” will start their “phase-in” with Zibby this month. Our hats are off to Chuck, Chet, and Roger for being willing to help out and to Zibby for all he’s done for NAP over these many years! Others who are willing to give some help to Chuck, et. al., are encouraged to call any of us mentioned in this letter—and if you SoCal cats don’t call us, we may call you! As ever in NAP! --Don Chuck Carpenter ‘54 #389I couldn’t believe that Zibby was serious about his plans to take things a little easier until I received a phone call from Brother Don Smith ‘53 #384 saying that it was really true. With the support of a few of his friends, Don Smith convinced Roger Wheeler ‘50 #321, Chet Jaeger ‘47 #296, and me to try to pick up a few of the responsibilities that Zibby has performed so well for so many years. As many of you know, Don can be very persuasive. Our major job will be to serve as a liaison between the college and the fraternity. Although no one knows exactly what this means, it includes picking up fraternity mail at the Alumni office, insuring that dues and gifts to the Nu Alpha Phi Memorial Scholarship Fund are received, and forwarding letters to Oak Leaf editors, Paul Nagai and Chris Hall. Our jobs will also involve an occasional smile and a thank-you to the thoughtful and patient staff members in the college’s alumni and duplicating service offices who help the fraternity in so many ways. We couldn’t get along without them. Roger, Chet, and I look forward to our visits to the Alumni Office where we will do whatever needs to be done with stacks of mail, news from alums, and (we hope) tall piles of checks. No one can fill Zibby’s shoes, but we are fortunate that he lives only a few miles away in San Dimas. Knowing Zibby, he will be sure that we do it right. Sincerely, --Chuck email: email_deleted |
