On November 27, Paul Taylor #181 died after a long illness. He was a very loyal Nu Alpha in the Class of 1937. An account will come out in the next Pomona Magazine. He gave a lot of time and support to the Huntington Hospital and other charities. I attended a large memorial service for him which included a full church of Rotarians and other business men from Pasadena and San Marino. We lost another Nu Alpha many of you will remember, Jack Oakey #151 in the class of 1937. His daughter is married to Zibby's son. I hope we can have another table on the quad again on Alumni day in May. [You betcha! –Ed.] Also, I would like to hear from more Alumni of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Just a line in the Oak Leaf. Fraternally, Ken
It was of course disturbing to read in the recent Oak Leaf of the current problems of NAP. I hope all the issues will soon be sorted out. Enclosed is a check for dues. After retiring in 1994 from Scudder Stevens & Clark, where I had the good fortune of being my whole professional life, I went to Cambridge University. Since returning I’ve stayed very involved, and am currently Chairman of Cambridge in America, a fund raising and alumni outreach organization supporting the collegiate University. I am also a trustee of the Cambridge Foundation in England. Other interests are as a trustee of Pomona (Honorary now, age reality), and board of the New York Philharmonic. Still fishing regularly, summers with Bob Hatch ‘51 #335, Tom McFadden ‘51 #340 and John Pendleton ‘51 #342, occasionally with Jack Keating ‘51 #337 and Phil Swan ‘51 #345. Marjorie and I also enjoy travel and, when possible, avoiding memory lapses. Thanks for all your good work.
I would like to make a contribution to the Nu Alpha Phi Memorial Scholarship in memory of Paul Taylor ‘37, loyal Nappie, strong leader in his church, community, and for mankind. As well he handled off-and-on a variety of physical problems with steadfastness, good humor, and never slowed down on his good works. He typified what is good and honorable, and never lost his enthusiasm. My congratulations to Lee Harlan and the others for working through serious problems facing the Actives. For a time I was wondering why I encouraged him to become Alumni Secretary in the first place, why he accepted an honorary membership, or why he accepted this recent responsibility. I, personally, have always felt Lee’s activities in behalf of Pomona have been almost beyond description.
Resurfacing after 20 years-I thought it was time to pay up some dues + back dues even if it is in Canadian pesos (they are worth a bit more now than a few months ago). Working as a geologist for a mining company which involves travel to Latin America for several months of the year-wish I’d paid more attention in Spanish class when I was receiving my liberal arts education. Still climbing, too, but not as much-mostly a big expedition every year or two. Last year-Vinson Massif in Antarctica; this month, Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus. So sorry to hear about the demise of the cabin! NAPers welcome in Vancouver.
Thanks for the good history of the cabin construction in 1922. The only thing I wished for was a crude map. Hope someone will write up the history of the Fraternity since then down to, say, the fire.
Such a shock to learn the sad news in the last Oak Leaf; the demise of our treasured Nu Alpha Phi Cabin by wildfire last September. The detailed accounting of the events surrounding the fire in San Dimas Canyon and the revealing but depressing photographs on the Nappy Web Site contrasted with the fine relation of highlights of the early history of the cabin by excerpt from Bob Dozier’s NAP 70th Anniversary address (Oak Leaf, June 1991) included in the issue have urged me to add a few reflections. One wonders, with all considerations, if the possibility for restoration at the historical site remains in the future. I so hope it’s not the end of an era. I grew up hearing stories from my dad, Wes Leighton ‘23 #4 and my mom, Louse Leonhardt ‘24 of the challenging, but gratifying and fun events during and after building the cabin - including rock hauling contests and Joe Caldwell’s gondola ride to the bottom of the lift (my dad loved to relate that tale). Bob Dozier’s girlfriend, Fanny Boyd, and my mom were closest of friends. In fact, Bob and my dad continued on to Harvard after Pomona for graduate degrees in the company of their Nu Alph sweethearts, Fanny and Louise. After his studies at Harvard, my dad joined the teaching staff of Pomona College (Chemistry Department in Mason Hall). I was born shortly thereafter. In my first year, we lived next to the campus on sixth street (Across from Crookshank Hall, where the South Seaver Building is now)...then later through my teens in the quaint green house on the corner of Seventh and Harvard Streets (the house eventually donated by my folks to Pomona College; now forming the northwest corner of campus). My introduction to the cabin was as a kid, mostly through stories by my dad, but also through the Oak Leaf, edited by our one time neighbor, Channing Hale ‘23 #9, that I’d thumb through every once in a while. When I joined Nu Alpha Phi myself in 1952, the cabin was to me the real highlight of the fraternity (I should add that most all of my good friends were going Nappy as well!). Many a weekend evening through the next two years I toted my banjo and perhaps a six-pack up the steep trail for a little song and party time with brothers, friends, and dates. Those were the good-not-so-old days. Surely the cabin is remembered dearly by all who knew it. We can’t let it die. Hopefully the enclosed check will be of help toward initial restoration efforts. Paul—I had hoped to find a copy of the photograph of Bob Dozier and Wes Leighton-dressed as escort & date, slide #1-Introduction to Bob Dozier’s 1991 “The Early Years of Nu ALpha Phi” presentation at the 70th Birthday Party-See Oak Leaf 1991. [Ok, David, you’ve issued the challenge. I’ll see what I can do to track this down. I may have something in my files and I may be acquiring access to some of Bob Dozier’s slides. –Ed.]
Loren turned 100 years old July 16, 2002. He is now living in Temple, Texas near his daughter. Reaching the Century mark is quite newsworthy!
Will be with you in spirit [at Alumni Weekend 2003].
I have enclosed a recent newspaper article written upon my leaving the Manhattan Beach City Council. I hope the article brings you up to date on my doings. I have just been asked to assist with a parcel tax to help fund our local School District. I was very flattered that they asked for my help, but I will be asked to contact our Senior Citizens. Oh my, how time flies!
Still living in Denver and working for the Denver Public Library. On March 1, 2003, I became a mom. My husband is hoping baby Luc grows up to become a Rugby player-I’m voting for flamenco dancer. Thanks, Paul, for keeping us all informed about the Nappie News. Hope the next Oak Leaf has some less depressing news. At least it all inspired me to send in some very overdue dues! Ciao.
The news from Cambria is that I’m still very active in environmental issues. In August, I led the California Coastal Trail Expedition 2003 on the CCT for two days around and through Cambria for 34.8 miles total. It took lots of ibuprofen, but I’m ok again. I wish I lived closer to Claremont (to assist the Actives and our valiant Alumni Crew), but I’d never leave the Central Coast—willingly.
Please tell the Actives we hope they can decide on a path, follow it, & reap the kinds of rewards we have for the last 70+ years.
Subject: New E-mail address Hi all, This is to let all of you know that I have a new e-mail address, effectively immediately. I had the other one a long time, but I thought it was time to get into the 21st century with cable. Please correct your address book. Carl
Subject: updated directory info Hi there! Just sending some updated information -- I thought Pomona had updated my contact info, but perhaps they haven't forwarded it to you. In any case, here is my current e-mail address. Thanks, Sydney
Subject: Subscribe I was disappointed to hear about the fire. I am hoping that with my e-mail address I might get some updates. My family's cabin, outside of Tucson, narrowly missed being burned down twice in the past two years. It is now the oldest cabin on Mt. Lemmon. I'll send in some dues and hope for the best. (Very late dues, but if it will do any good I'll put some toward the cabin fund.) Thanks, Rick
Subject: my alumni wash Could this be the start of a trend? I hope so. Alums and actives alike need to get off their asses and take the initiative to reconnect with our fine tradition that I am so proud of, despite a small turnout at my gathering. The Nu Alpha Phi Members that did show were here until the bitter end, even though I wasn't. Nappies rule. Not too much to report, party-wise, other than Charles Annis ‘89 #993, Eumi Lee ‘94 #1060 and Susanne Coie ‘92 #1022 made the pilgrimage to the redwoods, and all were welcome with open arms and a floor to sleep on. Everyone who didn't make it missed out, but they always do. Tom.
Subject: Change of address Please change my mailing address. Thanks,
Subject: change of address Please take a moment to make a note of my new coordinates. Thanks - Laura
Subject: Address updates and howdy! I was working on a paper at home today and procrastinating in between thoughts by looking around for NAP stuff, and I found out that the Cabin burned a few months ago! Whoa - what a loss! But, that said, I suspect that Nappiness will prevail and the spirit of that place will re-establish itself in a new building either there or someplace else the USFS deems appropriate. So much news, so much water under the bridge over the last couple of years. I won't try to get it all in here and now (too much procrastination, now I'm out of time - figures). But, please update my e-mail and web addresses in your database in the meantime. I'd love to get the electronic versions of Oak Leaf, and I need to catch up on dues in a big way. Also, if there's a way to contribute geological expertise to Cabin reconstruction, just pass my name along to the right people. Also, new home address, and yes, Dawn and I own this one so it should last... More news and dues soon, Yours in Nappiness...
Subject: new e-mail If you could update my e-mail to this address I'd much appreciate it.
Subject: E mail address correction Please correct E mail address. Thanks
Subject: Updated e-mail Hi Nappies! Just wanted to send an updated e-mail address. I've been living in Redlands, CA for a few years now working for ESRI, a computer software company. I'll send a longer update soon, but just wanted to get my address out there. I'd love to hear from any of the Nappies like Tim Tavolara '94 #1058 or Taran Reese '94 #1063 or Cricket Heinz '93 #1052 ... Hope everyone is doing well. Peace.
Subject: Aug 3, Portland, WASH! [John sent this report on a Portland Alumni Wash held in August 2002 in September of that year. I left it out of the last Oak Leaf for some unknown reason. Sorry, John! –Ed.] 4 nappies showed up and 1 nappie's sister. they were me, angel lee ‘03 #1246, jen kahn ‘99 #1192, ryan crie ‘00 #1201, and april collier's ‘99 #1148 sister, summer collier. also, there were about 25 neighbors and non nappie friends. the keg was tapped at 1:15pm. it was kicked at around 7:00pm. according to jed bursiek ‘99, the sun, grassy knoll, turntables, and keg made it very “wash-like”. ok. peace. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
